Blood Pressure Medicines and Erectile Dysfunction

Can blood pressure medicines cause erectile dysfunction?

Some can contribute, but high blood pressure itself is also a common cause of ED, so it is not always clear which is responsible. Never stop or change a blood pressure medicine on your own: untreated high blood pressure carries serious risks. Ask the prescriber whether the medicine could be involved and whether an alternative suits you.

Key fact: PDE5 inhibitors must not be combined with nitrates, and men taking other blood pressure medicines need medical advice before using them. (European Association of Urology, 2026; page updated )

Key takeaways

  • High blood pressure damages blood vessels and is itself a recognised risk factor for ED.
  • Some blood pressure medicines may affect erections in some men, but not everyone is affected.
  • Do not stop or switch the medicine yourself; the prescriber can review the options.
  • PDE5 tablets must not be combined with nitrates, and combinations with other blood pressure medicines need medical advice.

Why it is hard to tell the cause

Erections depend on healthy blood vessels, and long-standing high blood pressure can damage them. A man who starts a blood pressure medicine and then notices ED may be seeing the effect of the medicine, the effect of the underlying condition, or both. Anxiety about the diagnosis and other medicines can add to the picture.

Timing helps a little. ED that begins soon after a new medicine or a dose change is worth mentioning to the prescriber. ED that has crept up over years alongside rising blood pressure points more towards a vascular cause. Neither pattern is proof.

What to do

Keep taking the medicine

Stopping suddenly can raise the risk of a stroke or heart event. Change nothing without the prescriber.

Make a list

Write down every medicine and supplement, the doses, and when the ED began relative to each.

Ask about alternatives

Prescribers can sometimes adjust the dose or choose a different type if a medicine is the likely cause.

Check the other causes

Blood sugar, cholesterol, testosterone, sleep, alcohol and stress can all contribute.

Frequently asked questions

Do all blood pressure tablets cause ED?

No. Some men notice no change, and the effect differs between medicine types and between individuals. High blood pressure itself can also cause ED.

Can I stop my blood pressure tablet to see if ED improves?

No. Stopping on your own can be dangerous. Ask the prescriber to review the medicine and consider alternatives.

Is it safe to take Viagra with blood pressure medicine?

Often it can be, but it depends on the medicines and your heart history. PDE5 tablets must never be taken with nitrates. Ask a doctor who knows your full medication list.

Will treating my blood pressure improve my erections?

Better blood pressure control supports blood-vessel health and may help some men, but no outcome can be promised.
